YOGA CLUB MEETING 1

First Meeting - 29th January in Raphaels Cafe

The Yoga Club launched with our first official pop up meeting on Friday morning.  It was a slow but sure start with just me and new member, Shona, at Raphaels Cafe.  I was very glad to meet Shona and I hope she enjoyed the morning as much as I did.  We spent a lot of time chatting and getting to know each other.  Turned out we had lots in common and although Shona is new to yoga she has links with an ashram in India and spent time there experiencing meditation.  We reflected on the worksheet and talked about the study book "How Yoga Works" and how it puts the Yoga Sutras into context. 

There was time for some chair yoga and we practised the most important poses - sitting and standing, using blocks and chairs for adjustments.  A few cafe customers came in towards the end of our session but the cafe is very large and airy so neither of us felt self conscious.  And following the session we enjoyed coffee and cakes.  The coffee was lovely and the cakes delicious.  Surrounded by windows giving panoramic views of the lake, fountain and park it couldn't have been a better venue.  The cafe staff were very friendly and welcoming.  Owners Alcoyt and Alper were also on hand to help out.

The next session is planned for 26th February at 10am.  At £5 for two hours including coffee and cake it has to be a bargain.  Looking forward to seeing lots more of you at Raphaels next time ....

In the meantime, let me know what you think about the worksheet and how you are getting on with a home practice.  I've also suggested people start a journal to record their thoughts, feelings and progress.

Sorry I couldn't get to the first meeting - is it OK if I come to the next one. Is it the same time and venue? Do I have to come to all the meetings? My working hours change a lot so I may only be able to come to some of them.
I've enjoyed reading the worksheet. Do I have to buy the books as well? I've thought a lot about how the girl most feel - being put in prison for no reason. I would feel very angry in her position. The captain wants to learn yoga but he is being unfair to the girl. I've tried to think of times in my life when I do something for myself which is unfair on another person. It's certainly made me think. I'm not sure I can see the connection with yoga though.
Looking forward to next month's meeting and discussing it more face to face.

Don't worry - meetings are optional. You are very welcome to take part online if that's easier for you. The next meeting is on Friday 26th February at 10am in Raphaels Restaurant/Cafe. There's no need to book so come if you can - but don't worry if you can't. You will get regular newsletters anyway so you'll find out what goes on at the meetings that way.
I'm glad you're enjoying the worksheet. How Yoga Works is a very easy to read book but the connection to yoga as we know it isn't obvious at first. You will understand more as we move through the book.
Why not have a go at the simple practices outlined on the worksheet? Try standing and checking your posture (Tadasana/Mountain Pose) and then think about how you sit. Put a block under your feet if your knees aren't level with your hips. Try just one round of Surya Namaskar every day and record how you get on in a notebook - just a word or sentence each day is enough. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Sandy
I forgot to answer your question about buying the books. There's no need to buy them because you'll get a summary of each chapter on the worksheets. For people who'd like to have the whole book, there's a link to Amazon on the Club page. You might want to read the book through on your own once and then go back over it slowly with the worksheets.
I hope this answers all your questions now.
